Family Background

My name is Chen Tin-An. There are five members in my family. My parents manage a hairdressing salon. From their diligence, I deeply understand that it is not easy to earn money. When I was a child, my parents always told me “when you do everything, you must have confidence in yourself.” Gradually, I develop independent personality in order not to increase my parents’ burden. My elder brother is a college student. He has done many part-time jobs, and always shares his work experience with us. He lets me know that I should grasp the opportunity positively. My elder sister is also a college student. When I have any problem, I always talks to her. She often gives me some great suggestions. I am pleased that I have such a lovely family.

School Life

I studied at Department of Applied Foreign Languages in National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School (NTCVS). I am glad that I can enter this school. I made a lot of good friends who are very active. I felt happy and interested in school every day. I took part in many sport contests which were held by the school. When a contest was coming, my classmates who participated in the contest and I practiced hard every Saturday. Due to our efforts, we usually got a prize. From these contests, not only can it promote the relationship among my classmates, but we can enhance our teamwork.

When entering the school, I didn’t have any certificate. But now, with the help of the teachers and my own efforts, I have five different certificates, such as level 3 of the test of English Ability Association, General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) for the elementary, class C skill category of Computer Software Application, and so on. Though I don’t have many certificates now, I will continue to study hard and receive more certificates. In addition, when I watched American movies, I often attempted to listen to their conversation without seeing Chinese captions. Our teacher also encouraged us to read more English magazines and listen to English music. Therefore, I enhanced my English ability in NTCVS.

    In my class, I worked as a cleaning crew leader, discipline leader, and class treasurer in turn. At first, I didn’t know what I should do when my classmates didn’t obey my orders. Gradually, I attempted to use many ways to make them obedient to me. From these positions, I learned the ability of problem solving. I’m glad that I can acquire a lot of precious experiences during my high school life.

I have a very introverted personality and I am not good at interacting and chatting with others. When I step into a new environment, I am often very quiet and don’t dare to talk with strangers. However, I usually try my best to do whatever I did, or I will feel uneasy. In addition, I deal positively with my assignments without being hasty. During my school life, I attended many contests, such as volleyball contest, basketball contest, tug-of-war contest, talent show and so on. Consequently, I can attain a lot of valuable memories from these activities.

        When being bored, I can draw some pictures. As I was an elementary school student, I once joined the art club. In addition, I often participated in drawing competitions in school. I think that drawing can develop countless imagination and innovation. I am also interested in making some handicrafts. As soon as I have time, I will make a few handicrafts. I feel making them can let me distract my attention, so I am able to reduce my academic pressure.

Future Perspectives

As to my future, I hope I can progress in my English skills such as listening and speaking. Although, I am poor at oral speaking skill, I plan to go abroad for at least one month to strengthen my English communication ability in college. In addition, I want to obtain more different certificates so that I can find more jobs after graduating from college. Therefore, I will study hard in college and become a person who can make some contribution to the society.

I believe that the more I learn, the more knowledge I can get. As long as I do my utmost to learn, my effort will pay off one day.

My name is Fang. I am now 17 years old. I have an English name called Matthew. I am studying in a private high school. There are five people in my family. My father is a military officer and my mother is a housewife. Both of my younger brother and sister are studying in junior high school. You might think that my family is a traditional and stern family because of my father; on the contrary, it is the opposite. My father is open-minded and a person of sense of humor. I must say that I am lucky to have such a happy family.
    My father certainly has great influence on me, and I always look up to him. His passion and dedication to his job and family are the best things he gives us.     I have been very active in school activities. I am one of the so-called computer freaks who just cannot keep their eyes off the computer screen. My friends know I am good in computer. Being able to combine my knowledge of computer and music is my proudest thing. Don't get me wrong. I didn't neglect my study. Unless my grades in school are OK, my parents will not let me go for all these.
    I have been interested in computer since I was in the fifth grade. That was the time when father had his big computer on his desk. Every time I saw father's face with great concentration while using computer, I developed my admiration to it. I said to myself, “I want to be like him one day.”
    I liked to play around with my father's computer. One day I accidentally deleted one of my father's important files. I was so scared that my father would be furious with me. However, it was not the case. My father gave me a gift instead of punishment. I was so surprised. Guess what? Yes, I got a new computer. Ever since then, I have been addicted to computers, especially after the emerging of the Internet. Surfing the net has been one of my greatest hobbies.
    The e-commerce has changed our traditional lifestyle. Take myself as an example, I keep in touch with my friends through e-mail messages, I send my greetings through e-cards, I buy books from e-bookstores, I shop from many websites and I search information from the searching engine.
    Beyond doubt, the importance of the e-era has brought most powerful revolution to the business world. Banks and stock market transaction through the net, business to business direct transaction through the net and the space and time limitation no longer exist. I am fascinated with the new change and eager to take part in it. So I have decided to study in Computer and Information Science. I want to be a professional computer programmer who creates and designs the software to meet the needs of people in e-era.

I am Lin. Sophia is my English name. I am 18 years old, studying in a public high school. I come from a very happy middle-class family. My father works in a bank and my mother works in a bookstore. I am the only child in the family; however, I am not the so-called spoiled child. My parents have trained me to be independent since I was a child.
    Throughout my academic years, I not only get good grades but also am very active on sport field and involved in school club activities. I play volleyball and enjoy the team spirit we have. I have joined the drama club and participated in many English speech contests. I really enjoy participating in school activities; I not only make many friends and have lots of fun but also gain many different valuable experiences.
    I had been the class English assistant for almost three years. I liked to discuss and share the experience of learning English with people a lot. We often read China Post and Time Magazine then discussed their contents, the word usages and practice speaking English by discussing the articles we read. In the beginning, we found it hard because we could rarely understand the content, but we encouraged each other not to give up. Gradually, we had made improvement. We were so excited. Then the group discussion of English books and magazines became one of the most enjoyable thing for us to do every week. I won the first prize in the school English speech contest in my second year of high school and many of my English articles had been put on Students Post.
    My fondness for English has been developed since my childhood. It is lonely to be the only child. I had no one to play with when I was a kid. My mother knew about this so she brought me with her all the time. Hence, bookstores became my childhood playground and books have been my playmates. Mother would show me those fancy books with cute illustrations on them. Firstly drawn by the pictures, I was curious about these strange symbols called “words.” This was my first contact with English. As I was interested in knowing what those symbol mean, my parents taught me a bit. As they felt that I was eager to learn, they got me an English tutor. Thanks to my parents, I have advantages in learning English by starting at a really early age.
    My interest in English brought me to the world of English literature. I have been enchanted by this creative world, so I decide to major in English literature. My aim is to explore the world of literature and the world of great writers, opening my eyes and cultivating my mind through this great world of literature.
    Besides English literature, I also have a wide range of hobbies. I love reading, writing, music and movies. I have my active side as well. I enjoy swimming, hiking, traveling and getting close to Nature a lot. I believe we must achieve a sense of balance in our lives. As to my personality, I am creative, optimistic, determined, willing to help others and down to earth.

  I once lived in Taipei, and worked as a volunteer in a hospital. It really felt good to get the opportunities to help people. One morning an elder woman who always looked ruthless in the hospital took a walk in the park. At that moment, I attempted to talk to her, but she pretended that she didn't notice me. After this thing, I was very depressed. However, I really wanted to help her and realize why she always looked unhappy. From then on, I visited her about three times a week. She began to talk to me gradually, but didn't talk a lot.  Three months later, she told me why she often looked unhappy eventually. The woman didn't have any family and got cancer. Therefore, she was so lonely that she didn’t know how to contact with people. After chatting with her, I decided to visit her every day and take care of her in her last life. After this event, I grasped that helping people makes not only me but also other people feel happy.

Best of the semester - 2

I like to eat a lot of food, especially chocolate. First of all, chocolate is cheap and smells good. Sure enough, it tastes sweet and delicious. Second, eating chocolate makes me happy and relaxed. Hence, when I feel unhappy or furious, I usually buy chocolate and eat it. Third, according to the research, eating chocolate may also make us smarter because chocolate contains various stimulation which increases mental alertness. Eventually, I heard that people eating more cocoa have lower blood pressure than others. Consequently, it is beneficial for me to eat moderate amounts of chocolate. Due to these reasons, I like chocolate very much.

I want to hire a new English instructor. Now, I receive two resumes from Lynn Whitnall and Debra Fines. After studying their resumes, I decide to hire Debra for the following reasons. First, Debra has more education than Lynn. Debra had studied in three universities, but Lynn had only one. Second, Debra has five different employments; however, Lynn has only three different employments. That is to say, Debra’ employment experience is richer than Lynn. If Debra gets into trouble, maybe he will be able to handle it well. Third, Lynn can speak Spanish, French, and Japanese. Unlike Lynn, Debra can only speak French. Although Lynn can speak more languages than Debra, I put emphasis on English. Last, Debra published a book about English verb tense. On the other hand, Lynn received Excellence in Teaching Award, 2004. Though both of them are outstanding, I think that Debra is suitable for my requirement. Therefore, I choose Debra.

According to these effects, building a large factory in Acton doesn’t necessarily cause negative effects.

First of all, we advanced in medicine and health care, so people’s life spans are longer and longer. Another reason is that we improve farming methods that produce more and better food. Thus, we don’t have to worry about hunger. Most importantly, there are fewer infant deaths and more people living longer. This reason results in that fertility is more than mortality. After I bring these reasons, we can know why the population of this area increases rapidly.

We have to wear uniforms when we go to school to study. However, this rule causes many students' arguments. Some students agree with wearing uniforms, but others don’t. In my opinion, I am in favor of wearing uniforms. First, we don’t have to trouble what we should wear tomorrow. It helps us save a lot of time to think about that. Second, when we wear uniforms, we would pay attention to our behaviors. If we do bad things, the passengers can recognize the school which we study and inform our school. Finally, a guard in the school can know easily if there is a stranger going into the school. Therefore, it can reduce risks when we are in the school. Although some students insist that wearing uniforms be uncomfortable and wastes money, I think wearing uniforms can reduce troubles and save more money to buy other clothes. It is for all the above-mentioned reasons that I believe wearing uniforms is the best choice for us.

Using the death penalty as a form of criminal punishment brings a lot of different opinions. Despite the fact that the death penalty is cruel, I feel this punishment is necessary. I am on the same page as those who support the death penalty. For example, if we repeal the death penalty, the criminal rate may increase. Because they don’t worry that they will die and they can eat free meals in prison. In addition, using the death penalty can warn those who want to commit the crime. When they intend to kill person, maybe they are afraid of death and give up this plan. Most importantly, those murderers take people’s life and don’t have any regret. In contrast, we have rights to take their life to avoid them murdering more people. Taking into account all of these points, it should be clear that using the death penalty certainly exists.

First, Debra has more education than Lynn. Debra had studied in three universities, but Lynn had only one. On the way to the amusement park, there was a traffic jam; therefore, we spent about five hours arriving there. Before long, we bought expensive tickets and went into the amusement park. To our astonishment, there was a large crowd and we were nearly unable to move. Hence, we took the cable car first. A few minutes later, we got to the top of the amusement park; my brother and I decided to take the roller coaster. However, the procession was so long that we gave up. Furthermore, there were as many people as the roller coaster at other facilities. Eventually, we only took a walk in the amusement without playing anything. When we returned home, we regretted going there and felt disappointed. After this trip, we didn’t go to the amusement park on Chinese New Year any longer.

Thus, I was very depressed. I really wanted to make friends with her and knew why she always looked unhappy. From then on, I visited her about three times a week. She began to talk to me gradually, but didn't talk a lot. Eventually, I realized why she often looked unhappy. The woman didn't have any family and got cancer. Therefore, she felt very lonely. After knowing her condition, I decided to visited her every day and take care of her in her last life. After this event, I grasped that helping people makes not only me but also other people feel happy.
